Appendix Carry vs. Strongside: What Works Best?

Appendix Carry vs. Strongside: What Works Best?

More Americans than ever are stepping up to exercise their Second Amendment rights—and women now make up the largest group of first-time firearm buyers. Whether you’re a mom protecting her kids, a dad safeguarding his family, or anyone choosing to carry for personal defense, one of the very first decisions you’ll face is where that firearm is carried. Appendix Inside the Waistband (AIWB) or strongside at 3-4 o’clock? There’s no perfect answer. The right choice is simply the one that lets you carry comfortably, consistently, and confidently every single day.

Appendix Carry (AIWB)
The gun sits in front, just off centerline. Many carriers—men and women alike—love it for its speed and deep concealment. The draw is short and natural because your hands already move toward your centerline under stress. It hides exceptionally well under everyday shirts, tucks neatly when you’re driving or sitting at a desk, and keeps the muzzle from digging into your leg. For women especially, it often pairs cleanly with a wide range of clothing once you find the right holster fit.

The trade-off? Muzzle direction points toward sensitive areas, so rock-solid training and muzzle discipline are non-negotiable. Some body types or long days at a desk can make it feel less comfortable, and you’ll want a quality holster with a wing or claw to keep the grip flat.

Strongside Carry
The firearm rides behind the strong-side hip bone. This position feels natural for all-day wear—sitting, bending, driving, or chasing kids around. It offers safer muzzle direction in the unlikely event of a negligent discharge and works with almost any body type or outfit. Many first-time carriers find the motion intuitive and easy to practice.

The drawbacks are a slightly longer draw stroke and the chance the grip may print more when you reach or bend. Retention takes a bit more attention in close quarters, but for plenty of protectors it’s the comfortable choice that lets them forget the gun is even there.

The Seven Four Take:
There is no universal winner—only what works best for you. That’s exactly why we designed the 1776 IWB Holster Series to be truly versatile: the same holster runs perfectly in either appendix or strongside position with zero modifications required.

Concealed carry is about the quiet responsibility. By choosing gear that fits your life, training, and carrying consistently, you become a master of protecting you and your loved ones and a great steward of the Second Amendment. Every prepared mom, dad, husband, wife, or first-timer who shows up ready helps break old stereotypes and proves that lawful, empowered citizens make our communities safer.

Train often. Carry daily. Protect what matters most.
